ALDERGROVE – Nelson ties Port Coquitlam 2-2
Submitted by Chris Richards, Assistant Coach, U18B Selects
So stressful today! We went into the game this morning and it looked as though the soccer Gods were just not wanting to play in our favour. We started well and had a couple of clear chances but could only hit their keeper. We kept pressing and it almost payed off. We hit the crossbar twice once by Luke Mori and once by Scott Sims from a free kick. Byron then hit the post. Then bad luck struck again a poor call gave them a corner kick. They played it well and we got scored on. We picked up our game and got rewarded Byron Rokeby-Thomas got onto a lose ball inside the area took one touch and slotted into the bottom corner. We took that as a sign to keep pressing and we started to assert our authority. We again got unlucky though on a counter attack there was a mix up between our defence and our keeper and the ball squirted loose and they capitalized, taking the score to 2-1. We looked slightly taken aback by this latest development and we struggled to get back into the game. Lucky for us half time came and it gave us a chance to talk to the boys. We sent them back out and we started to play like we can again. The ball was given to Byron on the right wing and he beat two players slotting it past the helpless keeper. From there we had 3 or 4 really good chances and we just couldn’t capitalize. The game ended 2-2. Player of the game for us was Byron for the two goals he got.
From there we had to rely on Vernon to beat Cowichan. Luckily for us after a really tense game Vernon came away with the 1-0 victory which puts us into the final tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

ALDERGROVE – Nelson 1, West Vancouver 1
Submitted by Scott Lewis, Coach, U14B Selects
The U14 boys tied with West Van today 1-1. They got a goal on us about the middle of the first half. The boys fought back hard and Michael Viala was able to score for us. This gave enough to advance to the bronze medal game.

ALDERGROVE – Nelson defeats Prince George 4-1
Submitted by Scott Lewis, Coach, U14B Selects
A pretty successfull day for Nelson overall. The U14’s beat Prince George 4-1. It started with a goal by Sam Weber that bounced over the goaltenders head. Next Ryan (Lewis) was able to chip the goaltender on a free kick just outside the 18. Then on a penalty kick Ryan shot and the goaltender made a great save but Michael Viala followed in and buried it. Our last goal was great in that Ryan was setup to take a free kick but called Bean Howard over to take it as he is left footed and Bean scored. They scored on us on a penalty kick when Ethan managed to get a piece of one of their big guys in the box. It was a admirable tackle in my opinion. Arden (Gross-Woodske), Shota (Ida) and Cole Arcuri all had great games and allowed our race horses to do their jobs. Tomorrow we play West Van for a shot at the bronze.

ALDERGROVE – Nelson ties Vernon 2-2
Submitted by Chris Richards, Assistant Coach, U18B Selects
Just finished our second game. Played Vernon, and unfortunately didn’t go quite as well as before. We started the game really poorly, and didn’t put in anywhere near the effort that should of been present. We managed to keep it out for a while but with about 20 minutes gone they managed to put one in the back of our net. We again let them come at as again and were really lucky to get into half time only 1-0 down.
After a really stern talking to by Keith they went out and started to play like they can. We started pushing them really hard and it paid off as Jules Chopin pushed into the area he was a brought down from behind and we were awarded a penalty. Scott Sims took the pressure on and slotted it into the bottom corner. From there we never looked like losing. Unfortunately not always the obvious happens in soccer. They countered one of our attacks and we couldn’t clear it, one of their players broke through and slotted it past our keeper. From there we switched up our formation and played a 3-5-2. It payed off, Jules played a cross field ball to Byron, who beat one player and slotted it in the bottom corner. That was basically the last kick of the game, so we tied the game 2-2.
Our player of the game was Luke Mori, who was extremely industreous on the both left and right flanks.

ALDERGROVE – Nelson drops opener to Penticton 3-0
Submitted by Scott Lewis, Coach, U14B Selects
Pretty hot down here. We lost to Penticton 3-0. They were an excellent team with two very strong guys at the back. We made a couple of errors in the middle and things broke down. We played well but they were just a better team overall. No excuses. We had a few chances but were unable to finish.
We play play Prince George today at 3:00pm. I will let you know the news then.

ALDERGROVE – Nelson defeats Cowichan Valley 3-1
Submitted by Chris Richards, Assistant Coach, U18B Selects
The first game of provincials went really well for us. We played the Cowichan Valley Wolves, the second ranked team in the tournament. We started a little slow and it took us a couple of minutes to get on our feet. As soon as we did though, we played the ball around beautifully, our runs were purposeful. Everything we have worked on throughout the season came together in this game. We had a goal disallowed in the 15th minute, after a rifle of a shot from Jules Chopin rebounded off the keeper. Unfortunately, Luke Mori, who tucked away the rebound, was just offside. From there our heads could easily have dropped, but we kept at it and it paid off 10 minutes later. Byron Rokeby-Thomas latched on to a bad back pass, rounded the keeper who completely misjudged his pace and then slotted into the empty net. From there we never looked like losing, and 10 minutes later Yuki Miwa gave us a little bit of insurance after cutting in from the left wing, he drilled a shot right into the bottom corner leaving their goal keeper with no chance at all. From there the boys were really pumped and played a really tight possession game.
At half time Keith (Williams) and I told them to keep up the pressure and to play smart. With about 20 mins left Yuki picked the ball up again on the left wing and instead of cutting inside this time, he beat three players down the line before running along the goal line with the ball. After beating another two players he cut the ball back to Conner Adams who had made a great run in from the right wing, and slotted the ball away easily to put us up 3-0.
With about 10 minutes left the heat started to effect us a little bit, we started to look tired, and they threw everything they had at us. After about five minutes of taking the onslaught we finally broke. A long ball up from the back got lost in the sun and our keeper Kean Silverthorne couldn’t do anything. It went right to one of their players who slotted in the empty net. That woke us up a little and we rounded out the game with a solid 3-1 win.
Yuki Miwa was our man of the match for the goal and the assist, although it was hard because they all played so well.

A weekend of shut outs – one of ours, three of theirs.
In their opening game, the U15 girls accomplished their goal of the past two years with a 2-0 victory over local rivals, Kootenay South U15 team. Following that, the girls fell to the Kootenay South U16 girls by 8-0.
After a wonderful team dinner to honour volunteer coach Megan Chadwick, all girls headed off to rest up – but some spent the night in Emergency to help a teammate stabilize a health condition.
Early Sunday morning, the Selects suited up against Columbia Valley, a match that sent two more players to the Emergency ward to mend a broken foot and sprained ankle while the rest of the team battled to a 2-0 loss. Later that day, the shrinking team met the Cranbrook U15 girls and, after three unfortunate early goals, held them at bay for a final 3-0 result. In both the U15’s Sunday games they dominated the play and held possession for the majority of the game, but were unable to land their shots in the net, leaving our girls with a 4th place finish in the tournament.
Parents and coaches would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Brian Woodward for his willingness to go above and beyond to help out, even in the middle of the night while camping with his own soccer-playing sons – much appreciated!
